| Basic Skills - Learning Through... |
|
LEARNING THROUGH SPORT and LEARNING THROUGH PERFORMING ARTS are educational packages designed to target learning through the use of innovative learning material. Capitalising on the concept that, ‘ individuals are best educated through their interests’, the project will use the mediums of sport, and the facilities at the Wales Millennium Centre, as major areas of interest within our society to inform and educate the user. The learning packs will engage the user by setting tasks that expose the learning to the processes required to delivery the respective activity. (NO need to kick or catch, sing or dance.) The programme is essentially about helping young people to achieve targets in the Basic Skills of numeracy, literacy and communication. The outcomes are linked to Basic Skills Levels 1 & 2. (Core Curriculum) This will create learning pathways for the individuals into a more formal structure identified within the Entry to Employment strategy. It will be designed for young people within the 16 – 18 age group and in particular for those who may be classed as NEETs (Not in Education, Employment or Training). It will be produced to provide equal opportunities in race and gender as well as work across all socio-economic backgrounds. The LEARNING THROUGH programmes centre on the Student Learning Packs. Each Pack will include 5 elements of learning. Each element will address a range of skills identified from the Basic Skills Core Curriculum for Numeracy and Literacy. Each element will contain 3 learning bites. The programme delivery Bite #1. The Mentor will work with a group of 5 beneficiaries. Mentor/ Learners will discuss the skills and to be covered prior to the visit to the venue. The learners will access the Internet to research information on the planned visit in association with this element. Bite #2, The Visit. During a visit to the venue the beneficiaries will undertake the set tasks and record their findings and information in the Handbook. Bite #3. The e-Learning. The beneficiaries will then access the e-Learning part of the project. This package will assess the student's understanding of the themes set and provide a method to identify the need for additional support and explanation. The e-Learning element will provide a measured evaluation of the beneficiaries’ work. Why this style? This type of approach follows the research findings of Gardner with respect to Multiple Intelligencing and draws on the fact that young people today are increasingly visually literate. In addition VAK learning emphasises the need to develop material that supports learning through Visual, Auditory, Kinaesthetic modes. |
